John Hersey's book entitled Hiroshima opened the eyes of the way many people saw the American attack on the peaceful Japanese city. Hersey interviews srvivors of the attack and describes events that occurred after the before, during, and after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima through the eyes of the survivors. The novel shows that the Japanese citizens truly had no idea of what the Americans were going to unleash upon them. Each of the survivors showed readers that August 6th was expected to be just another average day to the people of Hiroshima. Although during World War II, no day in Japan was truly 'average'. The people lived everyday in fear that the Americans would unleash some sort of harsh attack against them. American proved to do just that when they dropped history's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Hersey wrote the novel without any opinions shown through the story. This story is very real, dry and to the point. He vividly explains what the survivors have seen, just as they explained it to him, in great detail. The novel is a great classic of World War II, it proves that the American's were not the only ones to be hurt in the fighting and it is human to feel sympathy for these people and what had happened to them, regardless of whose side you're on.
